Water sports organized in Tehri Lake.
Ashwani Tripathi, Jagran, Dehradun. The identity of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand will no longer be limited to tourism only. The calm waves of the lakes spread between the mountains are now going to make Uttarakhand an international hub of water sports.
THDC India Limited has intensified its preparations. A world class sports center will be developed from Tehri Lake to Koteshwar, which will become the biggest hub of water sports in the country in the coming years.
The huge Tehri Lake formed by the Tehri Dam is very suitable for kayaking, canoeing and other water sports due to its stable water level, long water area and protected natural structure.
This is the reason why THDC has given Tehri a big identity on the water sports map by organizing national and international competitions here in the last few years.
Now, on the instructions of the Central Government, the Koteshwar area will be developed as a complete international water sports corridor by connecting Tehri Lake, so that training, competition as well as sports tourism can progress here.
Experts believe that if India gets to host the Olympics in the year 2036, then Uttarakhand, especially Tehri, will be the biggest center of water sports.
Facilities will be developed for these water sports
In collaboration with the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association and Uttarakhand Olympic Association, a project is underway to develop facilities for multiple water sports in Tehri Lake and surrounding areas in a phased manner.
This includes sports like canoe sprint, canoe slalom, dragon boat-canoe marathon, canoe polo, paracanoe etc. The objective of developing facilities for these games is to make Uttarakhand a permanent center for Olympic-level preparation.
Champions being prepared in High-Performance Academy
The backbone of this scheme is Koteshwar. Here, in the High Performance Academy (Kayaking and Canoeing) established by THDC, players are being prepared for platforms like Olympics, Asian Games and World Championships. Players are provided with modern training, technology, infrastructure, services of coaches and experts.
Many top competitions have taken place
Over the years, many prestigious competitions have been organized on Tehri Lake, including Tehri Water Sports Cup, International Kayaking and Canoeing President Cup, as well as national and international open championships. The participation of players from more than 20 countries in these events has given Tehri global recognition.
