Jagran correspondent, Srinagar. Hundreds of students protested against the closure of the winter tuition center running in a private school in Hajin area of Bandipur district. Hajin-Srinagar road was blocked for some time.

His allegation was that the center was closed following the instructions of the Zonal Education Office citing government orders. A student named Ummat Khurshid said that we are not demanding any special facility. “We are just asking for the right to study.

Private coaching centers charge around Rs 2,000 per month, which our parents cannot afford. This was the only place where we could continue our studies without becoming a burden on our families. Rutba Hameed, another Class 10 student, said that due to the closure of schools, students from economically weaker sections have become worried and uncertain. If education is being given free of cost, why should it be stopped?

Hameed said that closing our classes feels as if the doors of learning have been closed for us. A government teacher, who did not wish to be named, alleged that the protest was aimed at getting students admitted in the future.

"Such activities are often done to arouse interest among students and not just for academic reasons," the teacher claimed. Officials said the action was taken in accordance with existing government rules regulating tuition and coaching centres.

Later, after SHO Hajin reached the spot and assured the protesters that their legitimate demands would be taken up with the concerned authorities, the protesters dispersed peacefully.
