Jagran correspondent, Angul. On the instructions of the state government, strict action has been taken against 72 head teachers of Puri district for not timely submitting reports of awareness programs conducted at the school level on reducing deaths due to snake bites and prevention of lightning incidents. The district administration has issued an order to stop the salaries of all the principals concerned with immediate effect. Along with this, show cause notices have also been served to everyone.

In view of the increasing incidents of deaths due to snakebite and lightning during monsoon, the state government had given instructions through the education department to conduct awareness activities in schools. Under this, it was made mandatory to provide information to students and the local community about snake bite prevention, first aid, safe behavior and precautions to be taken during lightning strikes. Also, instructions were given to upload photos, details and complete reports of the activities organized on the departmental portal.

A total of Rs 4,500 was provided to each school by the Puri District Education Office (DEO) for the successful conduct of these programs. This included Rs 2,000 for an awareness program related to lightning and Rs 2,500 for a program to reduce deaths due to snake bites. Despite this, 72 schools neither submitted the reports on time nor uploaded the necessary data on the portal.

According to the DEO office, despite several reminders being issued, there was negligence on the part of the principals, which has been considered as serious administrative indiscipline. Due to this, it was decided to stop the salary. The headmasters who came under the scanner of the action are from different blocks. Salaries of maximum 14 head teachers have been stopped in Satyawadi block, 12 in Puri Sadar, 11 in Pipili and 9 in Delang. Apart from this, schools of Nimapada, Kakatpur and Astarang blocks are also included in the list.

The District Education Department has clarified that the action of withholding salaries will continue till the complete report and necessary documents are submitted by the concerned schools. This strict stance of the administration has created a stir in the education department of the district.
