Supreme Court Seeks Feedback From 17 States For Setting Up Special NIA Courts

Digital Desk, New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Tuesday, February 10, issued notices to 17 states, including Delhi, Gujarat and Maharashtra, to ensure setting up of special NIA courts in those states where 10 or more cases are pending under anti-terrorism laws.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant has sought response from the states. The Union Home Ministry has submitted a comprehensive status report and said that it has proposed setting up of special courts in states where 10 or more cases are being investigated by the NIA.

The bench also included Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice NV Anjaria. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati informed that the Home Ministry has finalized the norms for providing financial assistance for these special courts.

According to a Home Ministry report, the Center will provide a one-time grant of Rs 1 crore and then Rs 1 crore annually for each special court.

The report said these funds will cover infrastructure renewal, IT equipment, vehicles and staff salaries. The bench asked the chief secretaries of 17 states to respond to the report within three weeks so that the setting up of special courts can be formalised.

The report said that 59 cases are pending in Delhi, 38 in Jammu and Kashmir, 33 in Assam, 33 each in Gujarat and Kerala. The Supreme Court bench said it would hear the aspects related to setting up of other special courts after three weeks.
