Digital Desk, New Delhi. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent election victory has given the ruling party a strong lead in the lower house of parliament, giving the government the political power to take clear right-wing stances on security, immigration, social values and economic policies.
Takaichi has called it a necessary step towards a strong and prosperous Japan. Let us tell you that Iron Lady Takaichi's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which took the risk of holding elections despite not having majority in the Upper House, got 316 seats in the 465-seat House.
Takaichi said in an interview with state TV network NHK that she would make every possible effort to make Japan strong and prosperous.
Takaichi expressed gratitude to PM Modi
Takaichi also expressed his gratitude for the congratulatory messages received from all over the world. Responding to PM Narendra Modi's message, Takaichi said that she will work together for a free and open Asia Pacific.
US President Donald Trump said that Takaichi is a strong woman. She will never let Japan feel embarrassed. According to Trump, Takaichi may visit the White House on March 19.
Emphasis on defense and security
The government is preparing to comprehensively review defense policies to increase military capability and relax restrictions on arms export. The target has been set to take the defense budget to around two percent of the gross domestic product (GDP).
There is also a plan to form a national intelligence agency and increase security coordination with allied countries – America, Australia and Britain. Fears about the impact on civil rights are also being raised regarding the proposed anti-espionage law.
US-China relations and diplomatic signals
Takaichi is scheduled to visit the US, where defense spending, investment packages and issues related to China are expected to be discussed. Relations with Beijing were strained after his earlier statements regarding Taiwan.
Crackdown on immigration and foreign labor The government is in favor of tightening permanent residence and citizenship rules, preventing defaults in tax and social security payments, and increasing controls on foreign labor. This stance is believed to be popular among nationalist groups
Social policies and family values Takaichi is a supporter of traditional family values. She has been opposed to gay marriage and in favor of only male succession in the royal family.
She has also opposed the legal provision of keeping different surnames after marriage, while women's rights groups see it as linked to gender equality.
Plan to increase expenditure on the economic front
To tackle inflation and slow wage growth, the government is emphasizing increased public spending and investment in strategic sectors—energy, food security, defense and supply chain. Temporary cuts in consumption taxes, particularly relief on food items, are also under consideration.
