Digital Desk, New Delhi. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said that the RSS has asked him to continue working despite his age. Also stressed that he will step down whenever the organization directs him to do so.
He also said that the person leading the RSS would always be a Hindu, irrespective of his caste. Bhagwat indicated that the top post would go to the best candidate. He was answering questions during an interaction session with attendees of an event to celebrate the centenary of the RSS.
'There is no election for RSS chief'
Bhagwat said, "There is no election for the post of RSS chief. Regional and divisional chiefs appoint the chief. Generally it is said that one should work after the age of 75 without holding any post."
He said, "I have completed 75 years and have informed the RSS about it, but the organization has asked me to continue working. Whenever the RSS asks me to step down, I will do so, but there will never be retirement from work."
'It is mandatory to be a Hindu to become Sangh chief'
Bhagwat said there is no community-based representation in the RSS and volunteers move up on the basis of their work. He further said that the Sangh chief should be a Hindu, irrespective of caste.
He said that when RSS was established, its work started in the Brahmin dominated community and hence, most of its founders were Brahmins, due to which the organization came to be called a Brahmin organization at that time. He said that people always look for an institution which has representatives of their community.
'Being a Brahmin is not a qualification to become RSS chief'
Bhagwat said he could not give a definite answer on whether the RSS chief would be from SC or SC background as it was a decision to be taken by those who appointed the chief.
He said, "If I had to choose a chief, I would have looked at the criteria of 'best available candidate'. When I was appointed RSS chief, there were many best candidates, but they were not available. I was the one who could be relieved and appointed."
He said that being from Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe communities is not a disqualification nor being a Brahmin is any qualification to become the RSS chief.
