Jagran correspondent, New Delhi. The Home Ministry on Friday temporarily appointed two senior IPS officers to the posts of Director General of Tihar Jail and Director General of Delhi Home Guards, which were vacant for a week. Special Commissioner Devesh Chandra Srivastava, posted in Delhi Police Crime Branch, has been given additional charge of Director General, Tihar Jail, and Special Commissioner Anil Shukla, posted in Special Cell, has been given additional charge of Director General, Delhi Home Guards.
Due to the ongoing Parliament session, the Home Ministry was not able to select permanent officers for these two posts, hence these two senior IPS officers have been temporarily assigned additional charge. The additional charge will be removed after suitable IPS officers are selected for these posts. It is also possible that if the Home Ministry is not able to select suitable IPS officers for these two posts, then these two officers may be given permanent full charge.
1995 batch IPS officer Devesh Chandra Srivastava has been posted in the Crime Branch for a long time. He is considered a strong contender for maintaining law and order in Delhi Police. For the post of Director General of Tihar Jail, Special Commissioner Ravindra Singh Yadav, posted in the Law and Order Division of Delhi Police, was being considered as one of the major contenders.
After him, the names of Special Commissioner Garima Bhatnagar posted in the Economic Offenses Wing of Delhi Police and Special Commissioner Rajesh Khurana posted in the Provisional and Finance Division were also being discussed. However, none of these three were appointed to Tihar Jail.
The post of Director General of Tihar Jail is considered more prestigious than the post of Delhi Police Commissioner. This is the first time that even after a week of the retirement of the previous Director General of Tihar Jail, the new Director General has not been selected. Till now, the name of the new Director General was announced even before the retirement of the existing officer.
