Goat is available on loan
The bank we are talking about is present in Chalisgaon tehsil of Jalgaon district of Maharashtra. This unique banking model is helping hundreds of rural women and that too without any money. Known as "Goat Bank", this bank provides goats as loans, which are not repaid in cash but in the form of baby goats.
Who runs this goat bank?
It is run by Seva Sahyog Foundation of Bakri Bank Pune and its aim is to help poor, widowed, single and landless women who do not get easy loans. According to media reports, more than 300 women have become self-reliant through this model.
Training is also given
Under the Goat Bank system, women get training in animal husbandry and goat rearing. After training, each trainee is given a pregnant goat. The only condition then would have been that after six to nine months, when the goat gives birth and the child grows up, the woman taking the loan would have to return one child to the bank as a deposit.
According to Seva Sahyog Foundation, a healthy goat usually gives birth to three to four kids in a year. After returning one kid to the bank, women can sell the remaining goats or raise them if they wish. Many women earn up to ₹30,000 annually in this process, which is a good source of income in rural areas with plenty of employment opportunities.

According to media reports, the women associated with this project have also formed a producer collective, Girna Complex Women Livestock Producer Company, to jointly manage the sales (of goats) and strengthen access to the market. The organizers of this bank are now focusing on adopting this model in other places also for rural employment and women empowerment.
