Shreyas Iyer became the captain of Mumbai team

Shreyas Iyer Mumbai Captain VHT: Team India's middle order batsman Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the captain of the Mumbai team for the remaining matches of Vijay Hazare Trophy. Ayyap, who is returning to the field from injury, has got this big responsibility when Shardul Thakur was unavailable due to injury.

Shreyas joined the Mumbai team on Monday and took part in the practice session under the supervision of coaches Omkar Salvi and Atul Ranade. Mumbai Cricket Association has informed about the appointment of Shreyas Iyer as the captain of the Mumbai team.

Actually, Mumbai Cricket Association issued a statement saying,

MCA announces that Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the captain of the Mumbai senior men's team for the remaining matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT).

Iyer's continuation as captain of the Mumbai team after the knockout stage of the Vijay Hazare Trophy will depend on the fitness clearance given to him for international duty by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Iyer has been included in the squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting from January 11 in Baroda.

Shreyas was selected in the Indian team selected for the ODI series with one condition. While announcing the ODI squad recently, BCCI had said that Iyer's fitness will be assessed at the 'Center of Excellence' and only if he is fit, he will be included in the ODI squad. Cricbuzz reported on Sunday that the chances of him regaining full fitness are high. Let us tell you that the first ODI between India and New Zealand is on 11 January in Baroda.

If Iyer gets the green signal for an international comeback, the MCA will have to appoint a second captain for the Vijay Hazare Trophy knockout matches, with matches starting on January 12. MCA Secretary Unmesh Khanwilkar said that we will take a decision after things become clear. Shreyas will lead the team in the remaining two league matches.

Iyer is recovering from injury

Iyer was out due to a spleen injury sustained while trying to take a catch during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney in October last year. He had an operation for his injury in Australia. Now on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, he is going to enter the cricket field after more than three months.

Mumbai team is currently in second place in Group C and is in a strong position to reach the next round. They will play their next league matches on Tuesday (January 6) against Himachal Pradesh and on January 8 against Punjab. Both these matches will be held in Jaipur.
