Jagran correspondent, Sirsa. The death of warden Sukhdev Singh working in District Jail Sirsa has raised many serious questions on the jail administration and police system. This case is not limited to the suicide of an employee only, but allegations of mental harassment, duty arrangement, caste harassment and alleged corrupt activities have also been added to it.
According to relatives, Sukhdev Singh was mentally disturbed due to continuous night duty for a long time. He requested the line officer and DSP jail security several times for change of duty, but his views were not listened to. Relatives say that Sukhdev had gone under deep stress due to continuous neglect and pressure. Amidst this tension, he consumed poisonous substance on the evening of 1 January.
Son revealed about selling drugs in jail
The deceased's son Jaspal Singh alias JP has made even more serious allegations against the jail authorities. He says that drug selling and other illegal activities took place in the jail, in which his father refused to cooperate.
For this reason he was targeted and continuously mentally tortured. Relatives have called it not just administrative pressure but conspiratorial harassment. JP told that during his job, Sukhdev Singh performed his duties in a completely honest and impartial manner, but he was not heard.
Questions raised on police investigation
The protest outside the mortuary before the post-mortem is an indication that the family and community did not trust the investigation. However, DSP Law and Order himself, citing his belonging to his own community, assured them of a fair investigation and action against the culprits, only then did he consider them as his relatives.
Post mortem of the body was done in the afternoon and it was handed over to the relatives. Now it has become a big challenge for the police to conduct an impartial investigation on the basis of suicide note, statement of relatives and duty records, on which the truth of the entire case depends.
There were allegations of torture against the officers in the suicide note.
The suicide note left before death has emerged as the most important basis of this case. In the suicide note, Sukhdev Singh has accused DSP Jail Security and Line Officer of mental torture.
He clearly wrote that due to the behavior and pressure of these officers he was forced to take this step. The suicide note also appealed to the jail superintendent for justice, which indicates that he was expecting some fair action till the last moment.
