India-Bangladesh started joint measurement of Ganga-Padma water level (indicative photo)

Digital Desk, New Delhi. India and Bangladesh started jointly measuring the water levels of Ganga and Padma rivers on Thursday. This work has been started at a time when this is the last year of the 30-year-old Ganga Water Sharing Treaty.

This treaty was signed in 1996, which will expire in December, 2026. Ganga is known as Padma in Bangladesh.

The work of measuring the water level has been started at a location 3500 feet above the Hardinge Bridge on the Padma River in Bangladesh, Dhaka Tribune newspaper quoted officials as saying.

Measurement work continues on Farakka and Hardinge Bridge

Whereas this work has been started in Farakka on Ganga in India. For this joint operation, a two-member team from India has reached Bangladesh under the leadership of Saurabh Kumar, Deputy Director of Central Water Commission.

While the four-member Bangladesh team has gone to India. Both the countries will measure the water level at various points in Ganga and Padma from January 1 to May 31. Water level will be recorded every 10 days.
