Lifestyle Desk, New Delhi. In today's era, we communicate our message to others in the blink of an eye through email and messages. But do you know that there was a time in India when it was very difficult to deliver mail in remote areas. Then to overcome this obstacle, the Postal Department chose the path of the sky and started helicopter postal service.

But why are we talking about this today? Actually, today was the date when India's first helicopter postal service was started and a new history was created in the field of communication. Let us know its interesting story.

Historic beginning in India

This revolutionary service of sending mail by helicopter in India was inaugurated on 27 January 1988. India's beautiful island group, Andaman and Nicobar, was chosen for this historic launch. Its first flight was flown between Port Blair and Havelock Island.

The main objective of this service was to deliver mail to those remote areas where reaching by road or rail was extremely difficult and time-consuming. In areas where mail previously took 2 to 3 days to reach, helicopter service significantly reduced the distance and time.

To make this unique initiative successful, the Indian Postal Department had joined hands with Pawan Hans Limited. Mainly ‘Dauphin’ helicopters were used in this service. Special ‘First Day Covers’ were also issued to commemorate this first flight, bearing the special stamp of ‘Helicopter Mail’, which is still a priceless record for postal history buffs.
