Jagran correspondent, New Delhi. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has expressed deep concern over the permission given to Ayurvedic doctors to perform surgical procedures in Andhra Pradesh.

On Thursday, IMA issued a written statement saying that this decision could pose a serious threat to the safety of patients and the standards of the country's health services.

National President of IMA, Dr. Dilip Bhanushali, in a written statement issued by IMA, said on this issue that the organization has always been committed to the welfare of medical professionals as well as the safety of the general public.

He said that Ayurveda and other traditional medical systems have an important role in preventive and promotive health care, but surgery requires years of rigorous, structured and specialized training, which is an integral part of the modern medical education system.

Honorary General Secretary of IMA, Dr. Sarbari Dutta said that surgery is not just a technical procedure. It requires a thorough understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, anaesthesia, emergency management and post-operative intensive care.

Clarified that allowing surgeries without MBBS and postgraduate surgical training poses serious risks to patient safety and public health. The IMA statement said that such decisions could create confusion in health services, increase legal complications and weaken patients' trust in the medical system.

The organization has appealed to the government to review this policy while giving top priority to patient safety and maintaining clear boundaries between different medical practices.

IMA also said that instead of weakening the standards, the health infrastructure should be strengthened by increasing seats, training and opportunities in modern medicine. The organization reiterated its commitment towards ethical medical practice, evidence-based treatment and health security of the nation, saying that patient safety must remain paramount.
