Lifestyle Desk, New Delhi. Usually when we think of Vasant Panchami, the worship of Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, yellow mustard fields and kites flying in the sky come to our mind, but at the Dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya located in Delhi, this festival is celebrated in a completely different and heart-touching style (Why is Basant Panchami celebrated at a Dargah).
This place is an example where Sufi mysticism and local traditions mingle with each other in such a way that the walls of religion get blurred. Here spring is not just the change of seasons but a celebration of the unbreakable love between a guru and disciple, which brought a smile on the face of a sad guru 700 years ago (Basant Panchami at Nizamuddin Dargah). Come, let us know about this in detail.
something like spring festival
Vasant Panchami marks the arrival of spring season. In Hindu religion, Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music and art, is worshiped on this day. People wear yellow clothes to symbolize the blooming flowers of spring and visit temples to seek blessings. There is also a lovely tradition of kite flying on this day in North India, where the sky is filled with colorful kites.
Nizamuddin Auliya was immersed in grief
The celebration of Vasant Panchami at Nizamuddin Dargah began with a very emotional incident. This story is about the unbreakable relationship between Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya and his beloved disciple Amir Khusro.
Actually, once Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya was in deep sorrow due to the death of his nephew. His disciple Amir Khusro was very upset to see his guru so sad. Then Khusro saw that some Hindu people were celebrating the festival of Vasant Panchami by wearing yellow clothes and celebrating with music.
This is how the tradition of spring started at the Dargah.
Khusro felt that this joy of spring could reduce his guru's sorrow. They also took out a procession wearing yellow clothes and carrying mustard flowers in their hands, singing in the eastern dialect. They reached Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya singing and dancing and offered flowers at his feet.
Seeing this innocent and loving effort of Khusro, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya had tears in his eyes and he smiled. He accepted this love of his disciple and joined the celebration. Since then this tradition of celebrating Basant Panchami at the Dargah started.
The glow still persists
Even today this tradition is followed with the same enthusiasm at the Dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. On the day of Vasant Panchami, the entire Dargah is decorated with yellow flowers. The courtyard of the Dargah glows with yellow glow.
Sufi poems and qawwalis are especially sung on this day. The echoes of the tunes started by Amir Khusro are still heard here. On this occasion, sweets are distributed among the people and offerings of flowers are made.
This festival is not just a celebration of the change in nature or the arrival of spring, but it also symbolizes spiritual contemplation and new beginnings. Here people from different religions and backgrounds come together to celebrate the legacy of this Sufi saint and the joys of spring.
