VK Shukla, New Delhi. In terms of public transport, 2025 has been one that has seen the government eager to do a lot, with even Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching 200 new electric buses in June. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was also seen continuously talking about strengthening the public transport service and to some extent her efforts also seemed to be moving forward.

But not much work could be done. When some new buses arrived, they were removed from the roads because they were older. That is, we can only say that a little has been done and a lot is needed. There is a requirement of 11000 buses but less than half of these buses are available.

This is definitely affecting the public corrections system. It is also noteworthy that the bus fleet which was once 7300 has come down to 5000 this year. Which includes 3500 electric buses. Amidst all this, buses have been started on three interstate routes this year. For the first time, arrangements for drinking water at bus terminals during summer have also been made by the government. Even in the Metro, no new corridor has been opened for the public this year.

But it was an important year for the expansion of Delhi Metro. During this period, progress was made in inauguration of new lines, construction work and tunneling. The new corridor has been approved. The expansion of the Metro will ease transportation in the capital. Challenges are continuously increasing on the BJP government regarding public transport in Delhi. Because DTC and cluster buses are continuously decreasing. In the last one year, 2401 buses have been removed from the roads.

When the BJP government came to power in Delhi in February, it was expected that the number of buses would increase rapidly. But this has not happened till now. In comparison to the removal of old buses, fewer new buses have arrived, due to which the problems of the common citizen are increasing.

How the situation is worsening is that till a year ago there were more than 7300 buses in Delhi. Now this number has come down to around 5000. Since January till now, 1400 new DTC buses have arrived and 2401 buses have been removed from the roads.

January: First section of Phase-4 starts

On January 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the extension of the Magenta Line from Janakpuri West to Krishna Park Extension (about 2.8 km). This was the first operational part of Phase-4, taking the length of the network to 394-395 km. The Janakpuri West-RK Ashram Marg corridor is expected to be operational by March next year.

Many steps have been taken to strengthen the rail network in Delhi in the year 2025. At the same time, 18 people died due to overcrowding and stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on the night of 15 February. After that, effective measures are being taken for crowd management at major railway stations. A permanent holding area with a capacity of more than seven thousand passengers has been prepared towards Ajmeri Gate at New Delhi Railway Station. There are preparations to build a permanent holding area at Anand Vihar Terminal and Old Delhi Railway Station also. This will help in preventing crowding on the platform. AI based CCTV cameras are being installed at stations.
