State Bureau, Shimla. Political activities have intensified regarding the elections for a Rajya Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh. Brainstorming regarding candidate selection has started in Congress. According to sources, in this regard, Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu discussed with senior party leaders in Delhi on Friday. The names of former Union Minister Anand Sharma, Congress state affairs in-charge Rajni Patil and former state president Pratibha Singh are prominently included in the list of possible candidates. The name of Health Minister Colonel Dhaniram Shandil has also come up in the discussion.
Effort to create balance in the cabinet
According to sources, the government may take steps in this direction with the aim of maintaining balance in the cabinet. The Sukhu cabinet has five cabinet ministers from Shimla parliamentary constituency. Currently one post is vacant in the cabinet, if Shandil is sent to Rajya Sabha, two new ministers can be appointed. In this situation, Solan assembly seat will become vacant, for which by-election will have to be held.
These are also strong contenders
Former Union Minister Anand Sharma is from Shimla, but he had contested the Lok Sabha elections from Kangra parliamentary seat on the instructions of the party. Congress President Pratibha Singh is also being taken seriously as a candidate. Rajni Patil is also considered a strong contender.
Was defeated despite being in majority
In the election for a Rajya Sabha seat in the year 2024, Congress had fielded Abhishek Manu Singhvi as its candidate, but Congress lost the election despite being in majority. On the other hand, the opposition party BJP has nothing to lose this time too. It is believed that BJP will plan to challenge the politics of Congress.
New indications from the presence of Anand Sharma
The presence of former Union Minister Anand Sharma in the meeting with the top leadership on RDG has given many indications. It is being seen as Anand's candidature. There was no discussion in the meeting regarding Rajya Sabha elections. According to sources, after the meeting the Chief Minister discussed with KC Venugopal and Rajni Patil.
