The High Court, while hearing a PIL filed against the proposed felling of 4369 trees due to the widening of the road in Shivalik Hathi Corridor between Rishikesh and Bhaniawala, has asked the state government to file a status report on how much budget has been spent in transplanting seven hundred trees.
The court has directed the Secretary, Public Works Department, to appear in person in the court with the records on Friday, December 19. During the hearing, suggestions were also given by former PCCF Jayaraj. On Friday, the PIL of Dehradun resident Renu Pal was heard in the division bench of Chief Justice G Narendra and Justice Alok Mehra.
During this time, the petitioner's advocate told the court again that the trees that have been transplanted have not been successful, during this time the government told that out of 4369 trees, 700 trees have been transplanted.
The petition states that 4369 trees have been identified for cutting for the widening of the road between Rishikesh-Bhaniyawala, which falls in the middle of the elephant corridor. In the past too, the Shivalik Elephant Reserve was protected after the intervention of the High Court. The daily routine of wild animals is being affected due to cutting of trees in the elephant corridor.
