CM Rekha Gupta spoke on the protest against pollution.
PTI, New Delhi. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday criticized those who were protesting at India Gate over air pollution. He raised the question that where were their demonstrations during the time of earlier governments when air pollution was a persistent problem?
The CM said, "I want to ask those who are protesting at India Gate. The problem of air pollution is not new and has been going on for many years. Where were your protests earlier? What did the previous government do? There is a backlog of 27 years. The government needs at least 27 months to work. After 27 months, you ask me what steps we have taken on the issue of air pollution."
Gupta said that night watchmen of various Residents Welfare Associations have been distributed electric heaters to reduce smoke and pollution from open burning fires in winter. He said that electric heaters are safe, clean and environment friendly option which can effectively help in the fight against pollution.
CM Rekha Gupta thanked Environment and Industry Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa and DSIIDC for their cooperation. Gupta also said that the Delhi government is taking aggressive steps to fight pollution. These include increasing the system of mechanical sweeping and water sprinkling on the roads, installing mist-spray technology on electric poles and implementing a comprehensive dust control plan across the city. Apart from this, strict measures have been implemented to control emissions from industrial units.
Gupta said that wall-to-wall carpeting work is going on on about 1400 kilometers of roads in Delhi so that the spread of dust is reduced. Burning of garbage or wood is strictly prohibited and needy families are being given gas connections to reduce their dependence on wood fuel. The Chief Minister said that these efforts have led to improvement in pollution levels but sustained reduction is possible only when the public actively participates.
