State Bureau, Ranchi. The All India Power Engineers Federation, representing power engineers working in state power corporations, Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and Bhakra Beas Management Board across the country, has announced a nationwide strike on February 12 against the privatization of the power sector and the proposed Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2025.
The federation claims that if the government does not change its stand, the power supply across the country may be affected due to this strike. The Federation has submitted a formal notice to the Central Government in this regard.
Announcing the strike, Federation Chairman Shailendra Dubey said that this movement is an expression of the deep dissatisfaction and concern of lakhs of power engineers and employees. He alleged that the policies of the Central Government were gradually weakening the public power sector.
Dubey gave a clear warning that if the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2025 is introduced during the budget session of Parliament, then electricity employees across the country will start a massive mass movement by leaving the workplace under 'Lightning Action'.
Cheap electricity and attack on federal structure
Chairman Shailendra Dubey said that electricity is the backbone of the country's economy, agriculture, industry and rural life. According to him, the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the National Electricity Policy 2026 are a direct attack on affordable electricity, public ownership, federal structure and national energy security. He described multi-licensing in the distribution sector, forced smart metering, PPP and TBCB models in transmission, outsourcing of operations and contractualization of jobs as fatal for the power system.
The federation has demanded immediate withdrawal of the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2025, repeal of the National Electricity Policy and a complete stop to the privatization of power corporations. Along with this, demands have also been raised to withdraw the smart prepaid metering scheme, regularization of contractual employees, immediate recruitment on vacant posts, restoration of the old pension scheme and stopping the alleged pressure of the Center on the federal structure.
