Jagran correspondent, Bhagalpur. By using antibiotics without doctor's advice or not completing the course of medicine, the bacteria present in the body develop resistance to the medicine. This condition eventually leads to antibiotic resistance, making even common infections difficult to treat.
This information was shared by dentist Dr. Subhankar Kumar Singh during the awareness campaign against antibiotics organized by Dainik Jagran and Indian Medical Association at Happy Valley School on Thursday.
Dr. Subhankar said that antibiotics are very useful in treating infections caused by bacteria, but their unnecessary and without medical advice has become a serious health problem across the world today. In dentistry, many people buy and take antibiotics themselves for toothache, swollen gums or other problems.
Although there may be relief from pain for some time, the infection does not go away completely and it may become more serious later. He clarified that not every fever, cold, cough or pain requires antibiotics. Antibiotics are not effective in viral infections, yet people use them without knowledge, which can prove harmful to health in future.
During the program, students asked many questions on side effects of antibiotics, right time to take medicines, prevention of dental diseases and ways to avoid resistance. The doctor said that a balanced diet, regular hygiene, periodic health checkups and following medical advice reduce the chances of infection and the use of unnecessary medicines can also be avoided. He said that due to dissemination of correct information among children and youth, awareness in the society increases rapidly, as they also convey the right message to their families and people around them.
Dainik Jagran: In view of the increasing misuse of antibiotics, this awareness campaign is being run continuously in various schools, colleges and institutions of the city. On this occasion, school principal Vivek Chatterjee appreciated this initiative and said that in today's time it is very important to provide scientific and correct information related to health to children.
Such programs not only enhance the knowledge of the students but also motivate them to become responsible health-conscious citizens. At the end of the program, the students took a pledge to use antibiotics only on doctor's advice, complete the entire course of the medicine and also make their families and people around them aware about it.
