The Indian Army has taken major initiatives towards dismantling the legacies of the colonial era and strengthening India's institutional identity rooted in its history and ethos. Under this, Indian names of 246 roads, buildings and other places are being kept in various cantonments and military stations across the country.
Its objective is to honor gallantry award winners, war heroes of the nation. These steps promote pride in the national heritage and service values. According to Army officials, 124 roads, 77 colonies, 27 buildings and other military centres, and 18 various facilities, including parks, training areas, playgrounds, gates, helipads etc. are being named after Indian gallantry awardees, war heroes and distinguished military personalities.
The initiative also reflects the unwavering national commitment to remember the valor and sacrifice, the Indian Army official said. In Kolkata, Fort William has been named Vijay Durg, while the sports complex at Rangapahar Military Station has been named Laishram Jyotin Singh Sports Complex.
At Jakhama Military Station, the Spear Lake Marg has been named Hangpan Dada Marg. Through this initiative the Indian Army has reiterated its commitment to upholding the sovereignty and integrity of the nation and ensuring that the places where soldiers and their families live, train and serve clearly reflect India's own heroes, heritage and values.
