PTI, Karachi. A plane from Dhaka landed at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi on Thursday, re-establishing air connectivity between Pakistan and Bangladesh after 14 years. Pakistan Airport Authority said that the Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight arrived on Thursday evening.

This is the first flight from Dhaka to land at Karachi airport after 14 years. The aircraft was welcomed with the traditional water salute after landing at Karachi airport. Pakistan Airport Authority has described it as a new chapter in the relations between the two countries.

The governments of Pakistan and Bangladesh have been discussing the resumption of direct flights between Dhaka and Karachi since last year in a bid to boost trade and other ties after years of strained ties. Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan in 1971.

The plan to restart direct flights between Bangladesh and Pakistan was first announced during the visit of Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to Dhaka in August last year. Dar's visit to Dhaka was the first such high-level meeting between Pakistan and Bangladesh in more than a decade.

The restart is being done after receiving formal approval from the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority, which has given the plane permission to operate on this route and use designated air corridors within Pakistani airspace, officials said.
