The European Union on Thursday announced sanctions on 15 Iranian officials, including top commanders and officials of the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, over a violent crackdown on nationwide protests in Tehran. The sanctions list also includes six Iranian organizations, including bodies responsible for monitoring online content in Iran.

The decision by the 27-nation grouping is the latest Western response to the violence, which activists say has left more than 6,300 people dead. These measures further increase international pressure on the Islamic Republic, which faces threats of possible military attack by the US.

There is still scope for talks between America and Iran: Russia

According to Prater, Russia said on Thursday that there is still scope for talks between the US and Iran. Also warned that any military action against Tehran would destabilize the security system of the region.

Commenting on US President Donald Trump's warning to Tehran, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, "We call on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid any use of force in resolving this issue."

America sent another warship to West Asia amid tension with Iran

According to Reuters, the US Navy has sent another warship to West Asia. This step has been taken amid large-scale military mobilization and increasing tension in the area.

The USS Delbert D. Black had entered the area in the past 48 hours, an official said. With this, the number of destroyer ships in West Asia has increased to six, which includes one aircraft carrier and three other coastal warships.

Thousands of people were arrested

According to Reuters, thousands of protesters have been arrested and intimidated in a crackdown on anti-government protests in Iran. Iranian security forces carried out this operation in plain clothes.

Human rights activists said that demonstrations started in Tehran last month over economic plight, which gradually became widespread. To suppress these demonstrations, even the Internet was shut down. According to the US-based rights group, 6,373 people have died so far in the protests and 42,486 have been arrested.
