Varanasi resident Bhola Prasad Jaiswal, a cough syrup smuggler who was arrested from Kolkata Airport, was presented by the Sonbhadra Police in the NDPS court of the district on Wednesday afternoon. Here the court ordered to hand over the accused to judicial custody for 14 days.

Before this, Superintendent of Police Abhishek Verma, while holding a press conference in the police line, informed that the accused Bhola Prasad Jaiswal was planning to flee to Thailand with his entire family. He is the father of drug mafia Shubham Jaiswal. After his arrest in Kolkata, he has been brought to the district on transit remand.

As part of the special campaign being run by Superintendent of Police Sonbhadra Abhishek Verma against drug mafias and cough syrup smuggling, the Sonbhadra Police, SIT and SOG team formed under the leadership of Additional Superintendent of Police Headquarters and Area Officer City Sonbhadra has achieved an important success.

SP said on Wednesday that the mastermind of cough syrup smuggling, Bhola Prasad Jaiswal son of Ramdayal, resident A-924/J, Kayastha Tola, Prahlad Ghat, Adampur, district Varanasi, was arrested by the team from Kolkata when he was preparing to flee abroad. After the arrest, a report was submitted by the police in the Honorable Court for transit remand in Kolkata, as a result of which the accused has been brought to Sonbhadra on transit remand.

Investigation revealed that Bhola Prasad Jaiswal was illegally distributing cough syrup in various districts by making fake billing on a large scale through M/s Shelly Traders, Ranchi (Jharkhand). SIT investigation revealed fake transactions worth about Rs 25 crore in districts Bhadohi, Chandauli, Varanasi and Sonbhadra, out of which most of the firms were found to be non-existent on the ground. The accounts involved have been frozen.

On November 29, a case was registered by Drug Inspector Rajesh Maurya at Robertsganj police station. It is mentioned in the said indictment that the fake firms of village Barkara, Maa Kripa Medical and M/s Shivksha Pvt. Ltd., from April 1, 2024 to August 23, 2025, 7,53,000 vials of Phensedyl Syrup were illegally sold in the black market. On the basis of the above serious allegations, Bhola Prasad Jaiswal was arrested by the joint team of Sonbhadra Police.

During interrogation, accused Bhola Prasad Jaiswal told that the firm was registered in his name, but it was run by his son Shubham Jaiswal. He further said that all the activities related to fake billing and fake transactions were also done by Shubham Jaiswal. Bhola Jaiswal told during interrogation that the entire operation of the business was being done from a warehouse located in Jharkhand. The financial transactions of the business were done by CA (Chartered Accountant) Vishnu Agarwal. In this regard also, Sonbhadra SIT team will separately interrogate Vishnu Agarwal. The accused will be taken on appropriate custodial remand by the SIT team to investigate the facts stated by him. Inquiry proceedings are also being conducted by police teams from other districts.

When what happened - - During checking in Sonbhadra district on 18 October 2025, a total of 1,19,675 vials of banned cough syrup worth approximately Rs 3.50 crore were recovered from two containers. - On 01 November, a total of 13400 illegal cough syrup vials worth crores were recovered in 134 boxes in Ranchi, Jharkhand. In the joint action of Sonbhadra Police and Ghaziabad Police on the night of 03-04 November 2025, banned cough syrup worth Rs 3.40 crore and funding cash of Rs 20 lakh were recovered from four trucks.
