Digital Desk, New Delhi. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Monday that some of US President Donald Trump's threats should be seen as preparation ahead of talks to renew the free trade agreement between the US and Canada.

Carney said he is starting a review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement this year. President Trump is a strong negotiator, and these comments and positions should be seen in that broader context.

Trump threatened this past week that the United States would impose 100 percent tariffs on goods imported from Canada if Canada moves forward with a trade deal with Beijing.

Meanwhile, Carney announced a series of measures on Monday aimed at reducing the cost of food and groceries for poor households hit by inflation, according to Reuters.

Food prices have risen sharply due to shocks to global supply chains caused by tariffs, climate-related weather events and geopolitical disruptions, Carney said. (With inputs from news agency AP)
