The Archaeological Department is investigating the age of the idol and the reasons behind it reaching the river.
Jagran Samvad Kendra, Baramulla. A centuries-old stone idol of Maa Durga has been found in the Jhelum river in Baramulla, North Kashmir. Baramulla Police on Friday completed all the necessary formalities and handed over the statue to the Archaeological Department. Police has also honored the fisherman Nazir Ahmed Latu, who took out the idol from the river. Police spokesperson said that last Thursday, Nazir Ahmed Latu, son of Ghulam Mohammad Latu was fishing in Jhelum river in Jogiar area of district Baramulla. When he threw a net for fishing in the Jhelum river near Shiri on the way from Baramulla to Uri, he found the idol there.
He immediately took the idol and kept it at a safe place and reached the nearby Sheeri police station. He narrated the entire incident to the police station and the police team collected the idol from him and kept it in the police station. Along with this, Sheeri police station in-charge informed the concerned officials in this matter.
Today, under the guidance of the Director of Archives, Archeology and Museum Department, Jammu and Kashmir, the idol of Goddess Durga was handed over to the officials of the Archeology Department. Officials of the Archeology Department said that the period in which the idol was made and how it reached Jhelum river in Jogiar is being ascertained.
