Digital Desk, New Delhi. Popular AI chatbot ChatGPIT suffered a massive outage in the US on Tuesday, disrupting service for thousands of users. More than 12,000 users had reported problems with ChatGPT as of about 3:25 p.m. US time, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com.
According to reports, the problem started around 3 pm, when users faced "elevated error rates". Many users reported messages not being generated, connection errors and problems in platform access. Two issues were also confirmed on OpenAI's official status page:
OpenAI said that they have identified the problem and are working on mitigation. The company assured the users that they are trying to restore the service soon.
Data from Downdetector showed that most of the complaints came from the US, although there were some global reports as well. More than 12,000+ incidents were recorded at peak times, many times higher than normal. By evening, some reports showed improvement, but full restoration of service was not confirmed.
This outage comes at a time when OpenAI is working on new models (like GPT-5.2) and is in the process of retiring older models, which may cause some technical challenges in the backend.
