Jagran correspondent, Agra. The city will soon get a dense forest developed on 16 acres of land at the Kuberpur landfill site. Out of the 47 acres of land reclaimed by the Municipal Corporation by removing the heaps of garbage accumulated here, 10 acres of land has been planted on Miyabaki method with the help of the Forest Department.
Plantation work is going on on six acres of land. The Municipal Corporation has claimed to commission the Waste to Energy Plant by the end of 2026.
National Green Tribunal (NGT) Chairperson Prakash Srivastava and Expert Member Dr. A. Senthil Vel's bench had heard the petition filed by Dr. Sharad Gupta on January 13, the order of which has recently been received by the plaintiff.
In the petition, the issue of increasing problem of air pollution due to accumulation of garbage and burning of garbage at the Kuberpur landfill site in the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) was raised.
Municipal Commissioner Ankit Khandelwal filed the reply on January 12. He said that in one-third of the reclaimed 47 acres of land, green cover development, plantation, urban forest, construction and demolition waste processing plant, bio-CNG plant, sanitary landfill, internal roads, weighbridge, shed, store and an administrative building are being built.
On the suggestion of the Forest Department, saplings of rosewood, tamarind, arjuna, jamun, mulberry, lasoda, lemon and acacia have been planted on Miyabaki method. There is no difference between the production and treatment of waste generated daily.
To strengthen the solid waste processing infrastructure, the capacity of the compost plant at Kuberpur has been increased from 300 tonnes per day to 500 tonnes per day.
At present garbage is not being collected here. The Municipal Corporation is setting up a Waste to Energy Plant with the capacity to process two thousand metric tonnes of garbage per day, which will become operational by the end of the year.
Plaintiff's advocates Anshul Gupta and Aditya Tenguriya raised the question of maintenance of the plants planted on the reclaimed land. NGT asked the Municipal Commissioner to take proper care of the plants, so that they survive. With this the bench disposed of the petition.
RDF will be used as fuel
The Municipal Corporation has clarified that the Refused Derived Fuel (RDF) collected at the site will be used as fuel in the Waste to Energy plant. Some quantity of RDF is sold to a cement manufacturing plant in Chittorgarh. In the year 2024, 946 metric tons of RDF was sent to UltraTech Cement Pvt. Ltd.
