Jagran correspondent, Muzaffarpur. Tobacco consumption is becoming the biggest cause of cancer in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar. This information has come to light in research conducted by Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre.

According to Population Based Cancer Registry (PBCR) data from 2018 to 2021, the highest number of tobacco-related cancer cases have been reported in men. Of the total male cancer cases, 34.4 percent are related to tobacco consumption.

That means one out of every three male cancer patients is affected by tobacco. This ratio is relatively less in women. Here almost one out of every eight cases was found to be related to tobacco consumption.

According to the research data of Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, the major sites of cancer in men were mouth (5.7 percent), tongue (2.8 percent), prostate (1.8 percent), cheek bladder (1.8 percent) and liver (1.6 percent) per 1 lakh population.

Whereas breast cancer (10.5 percent) was found highest in women. After this, the major cancer sites were cervix (5.8 percent), gallbladder (5.2 percent), lung (2.1 percent) and ovary (1.6 percent).

According to the data, a total of 1,641 deaths due to cancer were recorded between 2019 and 2021. These included 50.5 percent men and 49.5 percent women. On the basis of mortality rate, one out of every 29 men and one out of every 26 women are dying due to cancer. Of the total cancer cases, 60 cases (2.8 percent) were also found in children in the age group of 0 to 14 years.

Risk is higher in cases of mouth, tongue and prostate cancer

The five-year survival rate also shows a worrying situation. In cases of mouth, tongue and prostate cancer, the number of patients surviving for five years was only between 25 to 32 percent.

At the same time, the survival rate in cases of breast and cervical cancer in women was also found to be limited. Dr. Ravikant Singh, in-charge of Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Center said that if cancer is identified on time, its control is possible.
