PTI, Guwahati. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the state Cabinet has directed the police to register a case against three Congress leaders for allegedly making indecent gestures towards women during a recent political rally.

According to Sarma, the accused leaders include Assembly opposition leader Debabrata Saikia, former state Congress president Bhupen Kumar Bora and state Mahila Congress president Meira Borthakur, who was present at the spot at the time.

The Chief Minister claimed that during the rally in Guwahati, obscene gestures were made from the top of the bus, which he termed as a collective insult to the women of Assam.

Speaking to the media after the cabinet meeting, Sarma said that the Director General of Police has been instructed to register a criminal case under appropriate legal provisions. It has also been asked to send the related video clip to the Women's Commission so that the Commission can take cognizance of it.

The Chief Minister also demanded action from the Congress against the accused leaders at the party level. Whereas Debabrata Saikia rejected the allegations and said that nothing like this happened and he was only laughing at the ongoing conversation. A formal response is awaited from Congress.
