Jagran correspondent, Bhubaneswar. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rashmi Ranjan Das, posted in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha, suddenly came into the center of internet media discussion when pictures of her with naturally red hair went viral.

His unusual look led to memes, mockery and questions whether such an appearance befits a uniformed officer.

Seeing the matter escalating, this viral discussion reached senior officials, after which inquiries were conducted at the departmental level and verbal advice was also given.

The officer said – this is not a style statement

Responding to the controversy, Rashmi Ranjan Das clarified that her hair color is not the result of any fashion or experiment. He said that I neither apply red dye nor any other color in my hair.

Many years ago, due to medical and hormonal problems, my hair color became reddish. However, he did not share detailed information related to his disease or treatment.

The department was not aware of the medical reason

Police officials admitted that initially they were not aware of the health-related reason behind the change in hair colour.

When we gave him a verbal warning and asked why he had changed his hair colour, he told us about his medical problem, a senior officer said. The situation became clear only after discussion.

There are no strict rules regarding appearance

Interestingly, there are no strict standards regarding hair color in the departmental rules. Officials say that personnel may have different preferences in terms of personal grooming. In this context, the official said that many officers keep long and thick moustaches. This is a matter of personal preference and to a large extent subjective.

From controversy to clarity

Before the medical reason came to light, senior officials had advised Das to dye his hair darker to avoid public criticism. Now that the health clarification is on record, what had earlier become an online farce has turned out to be a lesson against drawing hasty conclusions about individual circumstances.
