Deepak Mishra, Barabanki. The department has taken a decision to make the cattle protection system more organized and resource-efficient. On the lines of schools, temporary and permanent cow shelters with less than 50 cattle numbers will be merged and the animals protected there will be shifted to larger and adequate capacity cow shelters. Dr. Meghpal Singh, Director of Animal Husbandry Department, Uttar Pradesh, has issued detailed instructions to all the Chief Veterinary Officers. As on January 1, 2026, the number of cows has been found to be less than 30 in 458 cow shelters operated in various districts of the state. On February 11, a meeting was held under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary Mukesh Meshram, in which orders were given to identify such cow shelters. It was decided to shift to resourceful and high capacity centers so that the funds for the maintenance of the cattle can be made available directly to the concerned new cow shelter. Also, it will be mandatory to immediately update the details of the transferred cattle on the Goashray portal. Six cow shelter shifts: Now approval will be obtained by holding a committee meeting at the district level and merger of small cow shelters will be done in a phased manner on priority basis. There are about 12 cow shelter centers identified in the district, out of which six have been shifted. This includes Masauli's Saraikayasthan, Banki, Satrikh, Subeha, Haidergarh and Siddhaur Nagar Panchayats, where the cow shelter animals have been shifted to other places. There are more mergers to come.

The department believes that this step will stop unnecessary expenditure on small, resource-poor centres, the capacity of big cow shelters will be properly utilized and the care, feeding, medical and monitoring system of the cattle will become more effective. -Dr. Sudhir Kumar, Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer.
