Ashwani Tripathi, Dehradun. The elevated road being built on Rispana-Bindal river will now be high speed. After a long exercise, the alignment of the project has now been changed. The design has been modified to take into account high-speed traffic.

Earlier this elevated road was designed by the Public Works Department on the basis of minimum speed of 40 km per hour, but after the objection of NHAI, it was changed. After making the new design, the minimum speed standards have also been set afresh. The minimum speed for vehicles on Bindal Elevated Road has been fixed at 50 kmph, while the minimum speed on Rispana Elevated Road has been fixed at 80 kmph. Now this project will be prepared as a high speed corridor.

Width of turns increased, alignment changed

In the old design, NHAI's main concern was about safety. The design of the elevated road had a large number of curves, where vehicle speeds were limited to 20 to 30 km/h. It was fixed per hour. NHAI said that sometimes drivers do not reduce their speed. In such a situation, there will be a possibility of accidents on these turns. Therefore the turning area should be wide. On this basis, the width of the turns was increased and the alignment of the road was adjusted at many places. PWD and NHAI have jointly changed the alignment of the road and sent the new design to the Centre.

Not just elevated road, traffic pressure will be controlled

After this change, this road will not remain just an elevated road, but will serve as a high-speed option to handle the increasing traffic pressure. The sharper the turns on an elevated road, the more brakes will be applied, leading to collisions and sudden lane changes. Now, by changing the design and widening the turns, the chances of accidents will directly reduce.

Now NHAI will build 25 km long elevated road

In this project of about Rs 6200 crore, about 25 km long elevated road is to be built on the banks of Rispana-Bindal river. The work from land acquisition to design preparation has been done by the Public Works Department, while the construction work is the responsibility of NHAI.

The design of the elevated road has been changed, the minimum speed standards have also changed. Now vehicles will be able to run at a minimum speed of 50 km per hour on Bindal Elevated Road and 80 km per hour on Rispana Elevated Road. -Rajesh Sharma, Chief Engineer, Public Works Department
