Jagran correspondent, Dehradun. Cardiologists at Graphic Era Hospital successfully replaced a damaged heart valve of a 76-year-old woman without any operation or incision.
The old lady resident of Doon was brought to the hospital in a condition of severe heart failure. He was complaining of extreme shortness of breath and swelling in his legs.
In the year 2014, the woman's heart valve was replaced by open heart surgery, but after about 11 years, the same valve got damaged again. Given the age and complex condition, repeat open heart surgery was not possible.
Dr. Raj Pratap Singh, head of the department of heart disease in the hospital and senior cardiologist, said that even the simple procedure of trans-catheter mitral valve replacement was life threatening, because it could cause closure of the second valve of the heart.
In such a situation, the only option left to save the patient was Lampoon procedure. According to Dr. Singh, under this state-of-the-art technique, first a path was made by cutting the damaged old valve with a special method and then a new valve was implanted through the vein of the leg.
The entire procedure was done without any incision and open surgery. After the procedure, the patient's condition improved rapidly and he was discharged from the hospital in healthy condition.
He said that this is the first case of valve replacement using this technology in Uttarakhand and any surrounding state. The number of successful valve transplant cases using this procedure across the country can be counted on fingers.
The expert team that made this complex medical procedure successful included cardiologist Dr. Himanshu Rana, cardiac surgeons Dr. Akhilesh Pandey and Dr. Abhishek, anesthesiologist Dr. SP Gautam and Dr. Parag Kumar.
Dr. Kamal Ghanshala, Chairman of Graphic Era Group of Institutions, congratulated the experts on this achievement. He said that considering human service as its mission, Graphic Era Hospital is setting new standards in medical services with the world's latest technologies and experienced doctors.
