NGT strict on damage to environment in Chandigarh. Answer sought from responsible officials.

Jagran correspondent, Chandigarh. Construction activities are going on in full swing in Chandigarh periphery area. This is causing harm to the environment and the responsible officials are unaware of everything. In such a situation, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has adopted a tough stance. Answer has been sought from the officials.

A bench of NGT Chairman Justice Prakash Srivastava and expert member Dr. A Senthil Vel is hearing the petitions filed by the Council of Engineers and others. An additional time of four weeks was sought from one of the defendants to file the reply. It was also assured that the statements recorded in the hearing on December 18 will be followed. The tribunal accepted this request.

The tribunal has ordered the interim application to be taken on record. One petition is based on a news report, over which the tribunal expressed serious concern. The tribunal observed that no reply has been filed by the defendants yet, even though this is the seventh hearing of the case.

Taking this negligence seriously, NGT has directed the competent officer of the defendant to present his clear stand through virtual medium on the next date. The next hearing of the cases will be on April 9.
