Estimated Production Of 96 Lakh Tonnes Of 'edible Oil', 1.67 Crore Tonnes Of Cooking Oil Will Also Have To Be Imported, IVPA Stated The Need.

New Delhi. Indian Vegetable Oil Producers Association (IVPA) has estimated domestic edible oil production to be 96 lakh tonnes during the marketing year 2025-26. IVPA says that to meet the domestic demand, 16.7 million tonnes of cooking oil will have to be imported. India mainly imports soybean oil from Argentina and Brazil, while palm oil is imported from Malaysia and Indonesia.

About 60 percent of the total domestic demand has to be imported. Speaking at a conference in Kuala Lumpur, IVPA President Sudhakar Desai said global edible oil markets have entered a phase of structural instability, driven by trade restructurings, biofuel imperatives and supply tightness.

Supply crisis due to challenges

Sudhakar Desai, president of Vegetable Oil Producers Association (IVPA), said that "global edible oil markets have entered a period of structural instability due to trade restructuring and supply challenges". Speaking at an event, he said, "Small adjustments in tariffs, mandates or trade flows are now creating disproportionate price fluctuations in the supply chain."
