Jagran correspondent, East Delhi. A scooter that was charging caught fire in a clothing shop in Purana Seelampur. Within no time the fire engulfed the four-storey shopping complex. As soon as the fire broke out, nearby houses and shops were evacuated. The fire was so severe that 25 fire engines were deployed. The fire was brought under control in about four and a half hours. Krishna Nagar police station is investigating the case. Till the time of writing the news, cooling work was going on.
Goods worth lakhs of rupees were burnt to ashes
Police said that information was received at 4 pm on Sunday that a clothing shop in Purana Seelampur was on fire. As soon as the information was received, fire brigade and police teams reached the spot. It was revealed that there are 15 clothing shops on the ground floor of a four-storey shopping complex built in 400 yards. A scooter was charging in a shop.
The fire brigade got worried
With a sudden explosion the scooter caught fire, causing a fire in the shop. Within no time the fire engulfed the nearby shops. The flame reached the upper floor, causing a fire there too. The people working here ran out in time and saved their lives. Because of the clothes, the fire brigade had a lot of difficulty in extinguishing the fire.
The road is narrow and full of encroachments
Due to the narrow road of Old Seelampur and encroachment on the road there, the fire department faced a lot of difficulty in extinguishing the fire. It is alleged that the first fire engine took about 25 minutes to reach Old Seelampur from GT Road. Due to which the fire kept increasing in the complex. Police and local people removed encroachment from the road. Multiple fire engines could not be parked at the same place where the fire broke out. One vehicle was pulled out after it ran out of water when another vehicle arrived at the scene.
Local people remained in panic, smoke disturbed them
Many shops in the complex were closed and there was fire inside. The smoke of the fire spread across the entire area. There was panic among the local people. The entire area was filled with smoke. People had a lot of difficulty in breathing. The eyes started burning due to the smoke. Troubled by this, many people in the surrounding areas closed their houses and went to their relatives' places.
