Rakesh Mishra, Lakhimpur. The effect of the ongoing cold wave in the district is visible in different forms on Rabi crops. According to agricultural scientist Dr. PK Visen, the current weather is beneficial for wheat crop, whereas it can prove to be harmful for crops like mustard, mustard and potato. In such a situation, farmers need to take crop-wise precautions and manage as per scientific advice.Dr. Visen said that the wheat crop is currently in the stage of budding and growth. In this phase, cool weather is considered favorable for wheat, due to which the roots of the plants become stronger and the number of buds increases. Due to cold wave, the incidence of pests in wheat also remains relatively less, due to which there is a possibility of better production. He advised the farmers to use balanced nitrogen in wheat and maintain moisture in the field by doing light irrigation. On the other hand, mustard and lahi crops are currently in the stage of flowering and fruit formation. In case of extreme cold and frost, there is a danger of flowers falling and the development of pods getting hampered. This can directly affect the yield. Dr. Visen said that there should be light irrigation from time to time in mustard and mustard crops, so that the temperature of the field remains balanced and the effect of frost is reduced. Cold wave can also have an adverse effect on the potato crop. Extreme cold can scorch the leaves of potato plants and stunt the growth of tubers. The agricultural scientist advised the potato producing farmers to do light irrigation in the evening if there is a possibility of frost. Along with this, the ill effects of cold can be reduced to a great extent by spraying sulfur or soluble potash. Dr. Visen appealed to farmers to keep an eye on the weather forecast and avoid unnecessary farm work during the cold wave. By timely irrigation, balanced nutrition and following scientific advice, the effect of cold wave can be reduced and better production can be achieved from Rabi crops.
