Shailendra Godiyal, Jagran Haridwar. Before Ardh Kumbh, major preparations have been made in Haridwar to prevent human-wildlife conflict and for protection from elephants. To prevent the threat of Tusker elephants from continuously reaching the populated areas, through the shield of technology, the Forest Department elephants are being fitted with radio collars.

So that real-time monitoring of elephants coming into populated areas can be done. Six radio collars are to be installed in Ardh Kumbh for security reasons. Six radio collars have also become available with the Forest Department. The work of installing radio collars will start in May. Before this, the team of Wildlife Institute of India will mark the leader or tusker of the elephant group coming to the populated area for two months. For this, a letter has been written by the Forest Department to the Wildlife Institute of India.

Haridwar Divisional Forest Officer Swapnil Anirudh says that this will be the first time that radio collar technology will be used for monitoring some elephants before Ardh Kumbh. For this, four radio collars have been made available by the World Wide Fund (WWF).

Two are already available with the forest department. Besides, the Forest Department has also signed a contract to install radio collars on elephants. After wearing the radio collars, a study on the movement of elephants will be conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India in March and April.

Radio collars are also to be worn only by those selected elephants who are team leaders or tuskers walking alone. Due to this, real time information about their movement will be available and timely action can be taken if any elephant herd moves towards the populated area. So that any major accident can be prevented during rush hour. The team of elephant experts will also be able to study the movement patterns of elephants through radio collars. Elephants reach Jagjitpur every day

The continuously increasing movement of elephants towards populated areas in Haridwar district is increasing the concern of the Forest Department. Rajaji Tiger Reserve has more than 500 elephants, but Haridwar does not have a buffer zone between the city area and Rajaji Tiger Reserve. Due to which wildlife directly reaches the populated area.

In Haridwar, the traditional corridor of elephants extends from Motichur to Tibri, Bhel area, Roshanabad and Bairangi Camp, Jagjitpur, Misarpur, Gadowali, Katarpur and Badarpur Jat areas. From Shyampur to Jagjitpur, Misarpur, Gadowali, Katarpur, there is elephant movement every day.

According to experts, due to urbanization and continuous reduction of agricultural land and gardens, the traditional routes of elephants have been disrupted. Where once there were huge mango orchards and fields, residential colonies have now been established there. 8.30 km long ditch will be dug to stop elephants.

Divisional Forest Officer Swapnil Anirudh said that to stop the elephants, a plan to dig a ditch about eight and a half kilometers long from Bairagi Camp to Katarpur was prepared under Ardh Kumbh. This trench digging work will cost Rs 2.36 crore. Along with this, there will also be solar fencing. A plan of Rs 57 lakh has been prepared for this.

Watch towers are also to be built at some places for security monitoring during Ardh Kumbh. Apart from this, there is also a plan for a six kilometer long security wall from Matri Sadan to Misrapur. Rescue team will be deployed in every zone

Divisional Forest Officer Swapnil Anirudh said that the Ardha Kumbh area has been divided into six zones. In every zone, Sub-Divisional Forest Officer level officers will be in-charge of the zone. Under him there will be at least two range officers and other forest staff. One rescue team will also be deployed in each zone. Which will be deployed for the rescue of snakes, crocodiles and other wildlife.
