PTI, New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Monday said the Central government should create awareness, compensate and make efforts to protect people who have lost their hard-earned money in cyber fraud.

A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan made the remarks while granting bail to Paramjit Kharab, an accused of creating Mule Bank accounts and selling them to cyber criminals.

Steps should be taken for the protection and compensation of the elderly

Mule bank account is an account which is used by cyber fraudsters to transfer the stolen money. Justice Nagarathna told Additional Solicitor General (ASG) SD Sanjay that the government and police should take steps to protect and compensate vulnerable victims, especially the elderly.

The bench said- "Educate the people." Play recordings on TV and radio to show how these cyber criminals work. They mainly target the elderly.

ASG Sanjay said that these cyber criminals are very clever. He said that the government has launched Sanchar Sathi app, where people can report any cyber crime or stolen mobile phone.

How do these fraudsters work?

Justice Nagarathna said- "Show people how these thugs work." Give them cyber security education.'' The bench granted bail to accused Kharab, who is in custody since March 2024, noting that other co-accused have already been granted relief. Sanjay opposed the bail plea saying that the accused is involved in cyber crimes in many states.

Kharab's lawyer said that the other co-accused have got bail and he is in jail since March 17, 2024. The Supreme Court is already hearing digital arrest cases, in which an elderly couple from Haryana complained of being victims of fraud by cyber criminals.
