How sports changed the fate of Bihar

Radha Krishna, Patna. Sports in Bihar is no longer an activity limited to just the field, rather it has become a strong foundation of social change, youth empowerment and new identity of the state. Bihar Sports Department, formed on January 9, 2024, has proved in just two years that if the policy is clear and the will is strong, sports can change the face of any state. The journey of these two years has brought Bihar to that turning point, from where the year 2026 is being considered as the formal beginning of the new era of sports.

How did the sports revolution begin?

The foundation of sports revolution in Bihar was laid in a planned manner. The establishment of Rajgir Sports Academy in August 2024 opened the way for scientific training, modern facilities and structured coaching.

After this, Bihar Sports University, Rajgir, inaugurated by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, created a permanent structure linking sports with education, research and career.

These institutions gave the message that sports in Bihar is no longer a hobby or an option, but a powerful medium for the future.

Champions emerging from village to village

In the last two years, the Sports Department did not limit infrastructure to just building construction, but made it a medium for creating opportunities. Developed sports facilities from district headquarters to Panchayat level have made sports accessible to children, youth and women.

Block level outdoor stadium, District Sports Building cum Gymnasium and developed sports grounds in villages have taken sports out of the boundaries of cities and taken it to the last person of the society.

The completion of 257 block level stadiums in the year 2025 itself is the biggest example of this change. Today national and international level players are emerging from the villages of Bihar.

Bihar has now not only become a state that produces players, but has also become a reliable host of international sports events.

Events like Asian Champions Trophy, Sepaktakraw World Cup, Asian Rugby Sevens, Khelo India Youth Games, Hero Asia Cup Hockey and All India Civil Services Athletics Championship proved that Bihar has the full potential to meet global sporting standards. These events not only changed the image of the state, but also gave new energy to tourism, local economy and confidence of the youth.

New interest in sports awakened in children

A fundamental change has also been seen in the thinking of player development. Massive talent scouting initiatives like ‘Mashal’ have connected millions of children to sports.

With the expansion of Eklavya Sports Schools and Training Centres, talented players are getting continuous guidance and better facilities.

Due to Khelo India Center of Excellence, Rajgir and other training centres, now the players of Bihar are no longer forced to go out for high level preparation.

Introduction of player-centric governance

The Sports Department has also made major changes at the administrative level. Sports clubs formed up to the Panchayat level have strengthened local leadership.

At the same time, scholarships, government appointments, incentives and welfare schemes have assured that the future of sports talent in Bihar is secure.

Players who win medals are no longer limited to just honours, but are also getting permanent opportunities and social prestige.

Bihar will become a sports hub

The year 2026 will be a year of confidence and expansion for Bihar Sports Department. The proposed Sports City in Patna under Saat Nishchay Yojana (03), district-specific Sports Excellence Center, strengthened operation of Eklavya Sports Centres, new scholarship system and large-scale appointments in sports administration, all these initiatives will take Bihar towards sports based development model.

Formal beginning of sports era

In two years, Bihar Sports Department has proved that sports can change both the identity and direction of the state. With the goal of a developed India 2047 and a glorious Bihar 2047, Bihar is now moving towards registering its strong presence on the global stage through sports. The year 2026 is being seen as the formal beginning of this new sports era in Bihar.
