In village Panchewa located in Javra development block of Ratlam district, the villagers have decided to conduct social and economic boycott against the couples doing love marriage and those who support them. The administration swung into action after the video of this decision went viral on social media. SDM Sunil Jaiswal has ordered an investigation into the entire matter.

By passing a resolution in the Chaupal organized by the villagers, it was announced that those who elope or have love marriage in the village and their families will be socially boycotted. According to the decision, such families will not be invited to any social program nor will essential services like wages, milk be provided. Apart from this, village pandits, barbers (hairdressers) and other service providers were also asked to stop visiting such families.

Ban on those giving shelter also

In the viral video, a person from the village is seen saying that families doing love marriages will be completely isolated from the village. It was also decided in the meeting that the same ban would apply to those who support love marriages or those who provide shelter to people who come from outside and get married. During this time, a public announcement was also made about social boycott of three families of the village by taking their names.

The Constitution gives the right to equality and freedom

Constitutional experts say that such social and economic exclusion is a clear violation of the fundamental rights of the Indian Constitution. Article 14 gives the right to equality before law, while Article 15 prohibits any kind of discrimination on social grounds. Article 17 abolishes practices like untouchability and social exclusion and puts them in the category of punishable offences.

No one has the legal right to exclude any person or family from society, deprive them of livelihood or restrict basic services. The Supreme Court has also made it clear in many of its decisions that marriage done by adults of their own free will comes within the scope of personal freedom protected by the Constitution.
