Jagran correspondent, Amritsar. In Kanth town of Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh, the case of an Amritdhari Sikh student being prevented from appearing for BA examination by wearing Kirpan is now gaining momentum. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has strongly condemned this incident and described it as a serious matter related to the religious sentiments of the Sikh community.
SGPC says that this matter is not limited to just one student, but it is also related to the constitutional rights of Sikhs. According to the information, the victim student has been identified as Kaka Japan Singh. He had reached the designated examination center to appear for the BA examination. It is alleged that the college management and staff present at the examination center stopped him from entering the examination hall because he was wearing Kirpan.
The student clarified that he is an Amritdhari Sikh and wearing the Kirpan is an essential part of his religion, yet he was not allowed to appear in the examination.

Kirpan part of faith and identity
SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said in a statement issued from his office in Amritsar that for an Amritdhari Sikh, Kirpan is not just a religious symbol but an integral part of his faith and identity. He said that preventing a student from taking the examination in this manner is extremely unfortunate and is a direct violation of the religious freedom guaranteed by the Constitution.
Advocate Dhami said that SGPC has sent a team under the leadership of Sikh Mission Hapur in-charge Brijpal Singh to the concerned college. This team is investigating the entire matter by talking to the college management and administrative officials and facts are being collected. Further strategy will be decided on the basis of the investigation report.

Dhami said that to ensure that such incidents do not happen again in future, it is necessary to issue clear guidelines, so that no student has to face insult or discrimination because of his religious identity.
