He scored 93 runs in the first ODI against New Zealand, but missed his 54th century. On the basis of his innings, India won the first ODI by 4 wickets and took a 1-0 lead in the series.

Batting first, the Kiwi team scored 300 runs in the stipulated 50 overs. On behalf of the Kiwi team, the innings of Devon Conway (56), Henry Nicholls (62), Daryl Mitchell (84) helped the team to score this score.

In response, the Indian team seemed to be in complete control while chasing the target, but as soon as Kohli was out in the 40th over, there was a flurry of wickets.

At one time India needed 67 runs from 66 balls and had 7 wickets in hand, but after this Jadeja and Shreyas Iyer also returned to the pavilion early, which made the match exciting. KL Rahul (29*) made a partnership of 37 runs with Harshit Rana (29) and took the team closer to victory.
