Digital Desk, New Delhi. The government told Parliament that India's relations with Bangladesh are "independent of relations with third world countries" and New Delhi continues to monitor developments bearing on its national interests while taking all necessary measures.
Said that the primary responsibility of the Government of Bangladesh is to protect the life, liberty and welfare of all citizens of Bangladesh, including religious and ethnic minorities. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said the government keeps a "constant watch on developments in the neighbourhood", especially those that have a bearing on India's security and national interests.
"The government accords top priority to India's relations with its neighboring countries, which are multidimensional and evolve in response to mutual interests, sensitivities and prevailing bilateral, regional and global circumstances," Singh said. India and Bangladesh, as neighboring countries, share deep historical, geographical, cultural, linguistic and social ties. Our bilateral relations are oriented towards people-centric development. Many exchanges and meetings have been taking place between the two countries under the institutional bilateral mechanism.
Question of security of minorities raised in front of Bangladesh
The Ministry of External Affairs was also asked whether the government had any discussions with the interim government of Bangladesh regarding "public killings of minority civilians, especially Hindus". "India has raised the issue of safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh at the highest level on all relevant occasions," Singh said.
The issue was raised by the Prime Minister and the External Affairs Minister during his meeting with Foreign Advisor Tauheed Hussain on February 16, 2025. The government "continues to monitor" reports related to the "protection of minorities in Bangladesh." Singh said, "The government is committed to protecting India's national interests and ensuring comprehensive national security in all areas."
The Government of India takes all necessary measures to keep the country safe. This also includes developments in our immediate neighbourhood,” he said, adding that India continues to engage with its regional partners to ensure that its security and economic interests are “respected and promoted”.
