India counterattacks on Trump tariff, imposes 30% tariff on American pulses; How did the October issue come to light now?
Agency, New Delhi. Taking retaliatory steps after US President Donald Trump imposed 50 percent tariff on India, India has imposed 30 percent duty on pulses and beans imported from America (India 30% tariff US pulses). The tariffs have been in effect since October 30 last year, although India did not publicize it much publicly to avoid provocation. This move has increased the possibility of the proposed trade talks between the two countries becoming complicated.
American lawmakers wrote a letter requesting
Two influential US lawmakers, Kevin Cramer of North Dakota and Steve Dens of Montana, have written a letter to President Trump on Friday, appealing for removal of this tariff in the interest of farmers. He says that this decision of India is causing huge competitive loss to American pulse producers, especially the farmers of those states which are major producers of peas and pulses.

What did the senators say in the letter?
The senators said that the most consumed pulses in India include lentils, gram, dry beans and peas (India retaliatory tariff US yellow peas). Despite this, India has imposed heavy tariffs on American pulses.
In the letter, the MPs stressed that India is the largest market for pulses in the world, accounting for about 27 per cent of global consumption. Despite this, it is unfair to impose high duty on American yellow pulses. He urged Trump to ensure better market access for American pulses before any new trade agreement.
The senators reminded that this issue was raised during Trump's first term also and a letter in this regard was handed over to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 2020 talks. It is noteworthy that this dispute has been continuously deepening since India removed American pulse crops from the Generalized System of Preferences in 2019.
