Digital Desk, New Delhi. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has said that India has all the necessary capabilities to become a leader in AI. He described the country's technological talent, national strategy and positive attitude towards the possibilities of AI as its biggest strengths.

Describing India as the world's largest democracy, Altman, who reached Delhi to attend the Global AI Impact Summit, wrote in an article that India is ahead in implementing AI on a large scale through domestic technology expertise and government policy initiatives.

Giving the example of the AI Mission of the Government of India, he said that this mission is designed to increase compute capacity, support startups and rapidly implement multilingual AI experiments in health, agriculture and public services so that AI can become an essential medium for crores of people.

He also praised the rapid adoption of AI tools in India and said that the number of weekly active users in the country now stands at 100 million, which is the second highest number in the world after the US. He said that India has the highest number of students using ChatGPT across the world.

Also, India is fourth in using OpenAI's free research and collaboration tool 'Prism'. Altman said, 'OpenAI is committed to developing AI with India and for India. The company has made its equipment available for free so that the reach can be increased to more and more people.

He outlined three priorities: expanding AI education, building out computing and energy infrastructure, and incorporating AI into everyday tasks. He said- 'Infrastructure decides the future.' Emphasizing on security, Altman said- AI will be successful only when people trust it. If the use of AI is not safe and reliable, its benefits will be limited.

He said- 'We will soon announce new partnerships with the Government of India so that the reach and benefits of AI can be extended to more people in the country. AI will shape the future of India and India will define the future of AI. And only a democracy can do this.

Focus on all three, access, use and capacity is necessary. Altman said, 'To increase the benefits of AI, it is important to focus on all three, access, use and capacity. Accessibility means people and organizations can take full advantage of AI. “Usage means implementing AI effectively in schools, workplaces and public services, and capability means giving people the ability and confidence to use AI properly, so they can learn faster.”

He warned that if access and use of AI is unequal, its benefits will also be unequal. If not handled properly, productivity and economic benefits may be limited to only certain areas.
