Tarapur Nuclear Power Plant gets new life from 'Swadeshi'

Know the main points and gist of the news at a glance

Digital Desk, New Delhi. India's nuclear energy program has been a great success. Unit-1 of Tarapur Atomic Power Plant (TAPS) located in Palghar district of Maharashtra has again started generating 160 MW electricity after renovation. This achievement is being considered special because India has become the first country in Asia to extend the life of an old nuclear reactor completely through indigenous technology.

According to officials associated with the project, the work on Unit-2 of the same plant is also in the final stages and it will also be connected to the national grid in the coming months. The plant is operated by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL). The plant was closed in 2020 for renovation and modernization, officials said.

New technology will shine

The renovation process has taken six years to complete. TAPS-1 and TAPS-2 were commissioned in 1969 and are counted among the first nuclear reactors in Asia. Nuclear reactors are normally expected to have a lifespan of 40-50 years, but Indian scientists extended their life through advanced technology, new piping, turbine-generator upgrades and digital monitoring systems.

Experts believe that this will strengthen the country's self-reliance in the field of clean energy and will reduce its dependence on coal-based electricity to some extent.

3-D laser scanning will increase security

The renovation included 3-D laser scanning, use of corrosion-resistant materials, new security systems and modernization of the control room. The plant has also played an important role in reducing carbon emissions by providing large amounts of clean power during its last operational period.

The withdrawal of the Tarapur plant is being considered an important step towards India's nuclear engineering capability and long-term energy security. According to experts, this will also pave the way for renovation of old reactors in future.
