Reuters, New Delhi. India this month seized three US-sanctioned oil tankers linked to Iran and stepped up surveillance in its maritime zones to curb illegal trade. The news was confirmed by a post on X by Indian officials in February, which was later removed, sources said.
A source with direct knowledge of the matter said India's aim is to prevent its waters from being used to transfer oil between ships, thereby hiding the source of the oil cargo. This seizure and strict surveillance comes after the improvement in US-India relations.
Washington announced earlier this month that it would reduce import duties on Indian goods from 50 percent to 18 percent after India agreed to stop importing Russian oil.
The three tankers have no connection with the company
According to sources of news agency Reuters, the three banned ships Stellar Ruby, Asphalt Star and Al Jafjiya frequently changed their identities to avoid law enforcement by coastal states. Iranian state media quoted National Iranian Oil Company as saying that the three tankers seized by India had no connection with the company.
The company said that neither the goods nor the vessel were linked to the company. Indian authorities said in a post on February 6 that they had stopped three vessels about 100 nautical miles west of Mumbai after suspicious activity involving a tanker was detected in India's exclusive economic zone.
