International Space Station will return to Earth on this day (Photo Source- NASA)
Digital Desk, New Delhi. When the International Space Station (ISS) returns to Earth in the year 2030, it will not only be the end of a space station, but will also end a major chapter of global cooperation and peace that lasted for nearly 30 years. This was the period when space became the strongest example of human cooperation.
There has been a continuous presence of humans in the ISS since November 2000. The station, the size of a football field and revolving around the Earth at a speed of about 8 kilometers per second, has been advancing science, technology and international partnerships.
Continuous human presence for three decades
The ISS has been the largest human-habitable space laboratory ever built. Here scientific experiments, new technologies were tested and human ability to live in space was understood.
According to former NASA official John Hornyak, humans living in space day and night for more than 25 years is an extraordinary achievement in human history. This shows that humans can choose cooperation rather than conflict.
Example of cooperation after the Cold War
The planning of the ISS began in the spirit of new cooperation formed between the US and Russia after the Cold War. Old rival countries together built this station. It is considered special that despite the tension in relations between Russia and Western countries due to the Ukraine War, cooperation on the ISS has continued till now.
Lionel Suche, an official at CNES, France's space agency, said human spaceflight is the most important space race in history and the ISS was its most important phase.
The station is getting old, its end is certain
Over time, many parts of the ISS have become old and are nearing their end of life. For this reason, NASA has given the responsibility of making a special vehicle to Elon Musk's company SpaceX, which will safely bring the ISS back to the Earth's atmosphere in 2030.
According to John Hornyak, the speed of the station will be reduced and it will be dropped in a deserted area of the Pacific Ocean, so that no human being or land is harmed. This area has previously been used to land several spacecraft, such as the Mir space station, which is called 'Pointnemo'.
Picture of space after 2030
After the demise of the ISS, only China's Tiangong Space Station will be left in Low Earth Orbit. Now America's focus is more on space stations built by private companies. In future, space agencies will have to pay fees to private companies to send their astronauts. Jeff Bezos's companies like Blue Origin and Axiom Space are working on plans to build commercial space stations.
